Muscle Relaxants can be used to relax the muscles in the face and neck, resulting in a temporary relief from dynamic lines and wrinkles. This gives a natural, and refreshed look.

With the temporary relief that it brings, this gives us time to work on strengthening the skin and to find any underlying reasons for excessive muscle activity, so we can determine the best solution.

To ensure that the most natural effect is created, we take the time to look at how the muscles of each individual’s face work, and how dynamic the results are on the face when different facial expressions are pulled. In this way we can balance the push and pull effect of the facial muscles.

Botulinum Toxin Type A injection (commonly known as BOTOX®) is a type of Muscle Relaxant that has many beneficial properties if administered properly. After newly discovering this cosmetic procedure, many clients often wondered why it had taken them so long to embark on this treatment when it gives them a natural, relaxed, and youthful look with almost no discomfort.

Botulinum Toxin (Botox) can be used to treat:

  • Tension headaches and migraines
  • Excessive sweating of the underarms
  • Neck spasms and neck lines
  • Cobbled chin
  • Teeth grinding
  • Excessive frown lines, forehead lines, bunny lines, crow’s feet, and mini-jowls
  • Mild eye-lid droop
  • Jawline Slimming
  • Nefertiti Lift

There are actually 3 Types of Botulinum Toxin Type A available in the UK at the moment. These have been split into 2 Categories – Therapeutic Name and Cosmetic name, each with a license for use cosmetically and therapeutically.

Therapeutic Name

Botox

Dysport

Xeomin

Cosmetic Name

Azzalure

Bocouture

Botulinum Toxin is the most effective treatment for improving dynamic facial wrinkles (the ones that appear when you make facial expressions e.g. smile, frown, laugh or raise your eyebrows). For example – wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes or between your eyebrows.

At my clinic, we view Botulinum Toxin treatment as a Massage Therapist addressing a knot in your muscles. It helps to relax it and prevent lines and wrinkles from becoming worse, while we address the strength of the skin. As the skin’s elasticity improves, there will be less need for muscle relaxants.

One session temporarily relaxes muscle contractions to give you a natural, more relaxed and fresher look. Wrinkles become smoother and often even disappear altogether. Most people require one session every 3 to 4 months in the first 1 to 2 years, then every 5 to 6 months thereafter if required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it?

A natural purified protein which PREVENTS fine lines and deep wrinkles from appearing and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles already formed. It is also used to relax hyperkinetic (over-contracted) muscles e.g. cerebral palsy, squints, lock jaw, neck spasm and teeth grinding.

How does it work?

It temporarily blocks the chemical signals that make the muscle contract.

What areas can be treated?

Glabellar (frown lines), Crow’s Feet, Forehead Lines, Bunny Lines, Jaw Slimming, Turkey Neck, Grinding Teeth, Painful TMJ, Cobbled Chin

How will I look after the treatment?

A slight reddening and swelling of the injection site may be temporarily visible but you can return to work. This will disappear extremely quickly. On occasion, some clients may experience a slight bruising but this can be easily covered up with makeup. I recommend Oxygenetix products which are healing and provide good coverage.

Does it hurt?

There may be a mild stinging sensation as the injection is performed.

When will I see the results?

Treatment usually takes effect after 3 to 5 days but can take up to 2 weeks for maximum results. Results will last 2 to 3 months for the first treatment and then 3 to 4 months after.

How safe is it?

It has been used safely for around thirty years to treat many neurological disorders and children with cerebral palsy. Each year tens of thousands of patients receive the treatment for relief from a variety of conditions.

How often do I need to repeat the treatment?

An average of every 3 to 4 months.
