Covid-19 Testing at Dr Terry Clinic

There are two types of coronavirus testing available at the current time, the Antigen (PCR) test, and the Antibody test.

Antigen (PCR) Swab Test

This test involves a swab into the back of the throat/nose to get a sample of the viral shedding. The sample is sent to the lab and results are available within 72 hours. This test tells you if you are ACTIVELY having a Coronavirus infection. It doesn’t tell you if you have HAD IT IN THE PAST. For the test to work, it is very important to carry out the swab test correctly. If this is not done it is possible to get false negatives, meaning that you actively do have the virus but you weren’t able to get a good swab of the viral shredding. We do not send Antigen test kits out for home testing for this reason, and all Antigen PCR tests are carried out only by our experienced doctors.

Abbott SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Test

An antibody is a protein that the body produces in the late stages of infection and may remain for up to months and possibly years after a person has recovered. Detecting these IgG antibodies will help determine if a person was previously infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

The antibody test we use is from the manufacturer Abbott and has received US FDA and UK PHE approval and is CE marked.

Data: Sensitivity: 100%   Specificity: 99.6%

This serology test has requirements different from a finger prick test which only requires a drop of blood. The test requires about 0.6ml of blood, which is approximately 15-20 drops, which is not appropriate to be carried out at home. As per the Antigen test we insist that our experienced doctors take the blood for you. This is also emphasised by Abbott themselves. The test results are available after 24 hours.
